ISRAEL KILLED HAMAS COMMANDER MAHMOUD AL-MABHOUH

ISRAEL KILLED HAMAS COMMANDER

MAHMOUD AL-MABHOUH

Israel has assassinated a senior Hamas military commander, Mahmoud Abdel Rauf Al-Mabhouh, 50, an official in the Palestinian Islamist group, Izzat al-Rishq told Reuters, on Friday 01/29/2010, in the Syrian capital Damascus. Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh was found dead in Dubai, the Gulf Emirates, on 01/20/2010, in unclear circumstances.

Hamas politburo deputy chief Mousa Abu Marzook said a day earlier, on Thursday 01/28/2010, "I believe the Mossad agents and the Zionist enemy are behind the assassination".

Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, married and a father of 4, from Jabalya, near Gaza town in Gaza Strip, is one of the founders of the Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. He was in-charged, in the late 80s’, on the kidnapping and assassination of two Israeli soldiers: Ilan Saadon (1987) and Avi Sasportas (1989).

Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh managed to flee to Syria, Damascus, in  late 1989, and lived since in Damascus. Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh was a top military operator and coordinator between the Hamas headquarters in Damascus, Gaza Strip and Iran. He was, for example, the coordinator of the Iranian weapon convoy transporting arms from Iran to Gaza, which was bombed near Port Sudan. in 01/2009 (see - PORT-SUDAN Bombing).

Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh already survived an attempt on his life, when Izz el-Deen Subhi Sheikh Khalil, another senior Hamas commander, was assassinated in Damascus, on 09/26/2004, after security cameras located a device attached to his car.

* His younger brother Faiq al-Mabhouh said to reporters in Gaza that according to the autopsy in Damascus Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh was killed by an electric shock after an electrical appliance was held to his head. Hamas sources in Damascus said Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh used a false name when he arrived to Dubai. They said he was, probably, brutally interrogated before being killed.

* On Monday 02/15/2010, Dhafi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai’s chief of police, showed in a press conference in Dubai an edited video footage showing a group of 11, including a woman, who committed the assassination. The group was made up of three Irish citizens, including a woman, six British, one German and a French, Dhafi Khalfan Tamim said (See - Al-Arabiya).

There are conflicting reports about Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh autopsy. A French laboratory did not come to conclusion about the reason of his death. They found two small burns of an electric shocker in his waist but they also determined that that the electric shock was not the cause of death. The French laboratory summarized their tests that the exact cause of death is yet to be concluded. Legally there is no proof Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh was, indeed, murdered.

* Due to suspicions raised in the investigation that a Mossad mole was operating in the Hamas leadership inner circle, Syria said, on Tuesday 02/23/2010, they have arrested Mahmoud Nassar, a close aid of Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, as a suspect Mossad informant.
