WOULD BE BOMBER ADEL DAOUD ARRESTED IN CHICAGO

WOULD BE BOMBER ADEL DAOUD ARRESTED

 IN CHICAGO

18-year-old Adel  Daoud, a US citizen from Hillside, Illinois, on the outskirts of Chicago, is expected to be in federal court Monday 09/17/2012, after being arrested, on Friday 09/14/2012, during an undercover operation where agents pretending to be extremists gave him a fake car bomb that he planned to blow up outside a downtown Chicago bar (see also the case of Sami S. Hassoun).

In a Saturday news release, the U.S. Attorney's Office said the bomb was inert and the public was never in danger.

Adel  Daoud was charged in court Saturday with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive.

Adel  Daoud first came to the attention of the authorities in 10/2011, when he sent out e-mails “relating to violent jihad and the killing of Americans,” according to an affidavit in support of the complaint. At one point he sent out several e-mails with a PowerPoint presentation titled “The Osama bin Laden I Know,” in which he defended Bin Laden’s tactics. “Osama wasn’t crazy for wanting to destroy America,” he wrote. “This superpower killed millions of people.”

In May 2012, Adel  Daoud was contacted online by two undercover agents from the F.B.I., and during these conversations he “expressed an interest in engaging in violent jihad, either in the United States or overseas,” according to the affidavit. Over the next month, law enforcement officials said, he was introduced to someone posing as an “operational terrorist.”

Adel  Daoud offered a list of 29 potential targets, officials said, “including military recruiting centers, bars, malls and other tourist attractions in the Chicago area.” He then chose, researched and conducted surveillance of the target and planned what he thought would be an attack using an explosive device, officials said. But they said there was never any danger.

According to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice in Chicago, Daoud's arrest was the result of an undercover operation where he developed his attack plans and surveilled and selected a target. The release said Adel  Daoud was closely monitored by law enforcement and was offered several chances to change his mind and walk away from the supposed attack.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement that at about 7:15 p.m. Friday, Adel  Daoud met an undercover agent in Villa Park and drove with the agent to downtown Chicago. Reports said that during the drive, Adel  Daoud led the undercover agent in a prayer that they succeed in the attack, kill several people and cause destruction.

Once downtown, the statement said, they entered a parking lot where a Jeep loaded with the purported explosive device was parked. Adel  Daoud drove the Jeep out of the lot and parked in front of a downtown bar — a target that he'd selected beforehand. According to reports, Daoud got out of the vehicle and walked into an alley about a block away. With the undercover agent watching, he attempted to detonate the bomb by pressing the triggering mechanism and was then arrested. Adel  Daoud is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing at 3 p.m. Monday.

Adel  Daoud’s older brother, Amr, 21, said he and his family were surprised by the arrest. He described his brother as a devout Muslim who would go to mosque for prayers with their father every day at 4 a.m. He said that their parents had come to the USA from Egypt, but that neither they nor his two sisters were as religious. He said that Adel, who had graduated from high school and was not working, wanted to go to school in Canada to become a sheik, a Muslim religious official.
