10 FRENCH SOLDIERS KILLED NEAR KABUL

 

 

Ten French soldiers have been killed, on Tuesday 08/19/2008 morning,  in an ambush by Taliban fighters East of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

 

Further 21 French soldiers were wounded in the attack - the heaviest loss of troops France has suffered since deploying to Afghanistan in 2002.

 

The soldiers were part of NATO-ISAF peacekeeping force in Afghanistan. The French troops had been caught up in fighting that started, on Monday 08/18/2008, in the area of Sirobi some 50 km (30 miles) east of Kabul.

 

The French were ambushed in a village, after they left the Ozbin valley, from several directions an Afghan intelligence officer described the event.  

 

The French have 3,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan and recently took over control of the Kabul regional command which includes Sirobi.

 

In another development 13 Taliban fighters and by passers were killed in the South-Eastern province of Khost, including six suicide bombers, while attacking a NATO-ISAF military base Camp Salerno, where many US troops are based.
