INDONESIAN JAMAA ISLAMIYA
 Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya is an Islamic militant group with ties to Al Qaeda and with similar ideology. The organization operates in Indonesia and the surrounding countries in order to create one big Islamic state incorporating Indonesia, Malaysia, Southern Philippines and Singapore under Islamic law – the Sharya. The meaning of the name is “The Islamic Society”.
The organization was founded in 01/1993 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, by the cleric Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar while both were in exile from Indonesia. One of the very first followers were Hambali and Abu Rusdan.
In the beginning Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya main activity was to support other Islamic groups in the region like Abu Sayyaf and Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Southern Philippines and Al Qaeda in Sudan and later in Afghanistan.
After the fall of the dictator Suharto and his regime in Indonesia in 1998, most of the followers of Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya returned back to Indonesia and began to expand their network and to plan and initiate terror attacks mainly in Indonesia but also in the Philippines and Australia. The most horrendous success of Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya was the Bali ‘02 Bombings which killed 202 people, many of them Australian tourists.
After a vigorous crackdown by Indonesian authority, alongside international cooperation, most of Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya operatives are dead or in jail. Today (05/2007) Abu Bakar Bashir is free after remissions for Indonesia's Independence Day of 08/2005.
Noordin Mohammed Top , the senior bomb engineer is still on the run but the activity of the Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya, was, by large, suppressed.
Summary
The circle of active terrorists in Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya never counted more than few dozens.
Relatively to other Islamic countries in the world, to the extent of Islamic population in Indonesia and the almost ideal geographical and demographical conditions, the level of Islamic terror in the country is very low. Only few Indonesians took part in global Islamic terror outside the country. Indonesian Jamaa Islamiya failed to integrate into Al Qaeda and the Global Jihad and to gain large public support in Indonesia. . Eventually the Indonesian moderate version of Islam did not cooperated with Islamic terror.
