Mustapha Kertali
Mustapha Kertali was born in 1946, a former Islamic militant, a member of the Algerian Islamist party – FIS and Armed Islamic Group, known in its French acronym – GIA.
As a FIS senior activist, Mustapha Kertali was elected FIS mayor of Larba in 1990. He was seduced by the Algerian military regime in early 1992 and became a militant activist and was appointed by GIA as the local Emir (commissioner). Mustapha Kertali was replaced in 1995 by another activist - Djamel Zitouni.
In 1998 the Military regime began to gain the upper hand in the civil war in Algeria and managed to crackdown, gradually, the Islamic insurgence, Mustapha Kertali joined the amnesty program of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in 1999 and became one of his strong supporters. He went into business.
He was assassinated on 08/14/2007 by a bomb in his car in the town of Larba, 25km south of the capital, Algiers, after he had attended morning prayers at his local mosque.
His assassination is a part of the growing Islamic militancy in the Maghreb in 2007.
