Hassan  Hattab

Hassan  Hattab was born on 01/14/1967 in Rouiba, Algeria. In the ALGERIAN Army Hassan  Hattab joined the paratroops and was a well trained soldier. In the ALGERIAN Army Hassan  Hattab got acquainted to his future collegues and llieutenants Amari Saifi and Abbi Abdelaziz. He left the Army in 1989.

After the cancellation, by the ALGERIAN army, of the 1992 elections and the breach out of the ALGERIAN civil war Hassan  Hattab joined GIA. In 1994 Hassan  Hattab was promoted in GIA as the commander of Kabylia Mountains region in North East Algeria. Under his command numerous target killings of people wee executed which, in his point of view, were Westernizing the ALGERIAN Islamic culture.

On 09/14/1998 he left GIA sharply criticizing the policy of massacring ALGERIAN civilians as retaliation to any slightest suspicion that the villagers are cooperating, in any way, with the ALGERIAN authorities. Hassan  Hattab formed his own group known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat - (GSPC) and was the organization’s first leader. Hassan  Hattab was replaced in 2003 by the more extreme leader Nabil Sahrawi.

Although Hassan  Hattab had no influence on the GSPC after 2004 he continued to claim that he is the official leader of the organization.  In an interview to the Arab newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadida,  published in London in 2004, Hassan  Hattab criticized Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda policy as too extreme that will, eventually, turn the world against Islam. There were rumors, which proved to be wrong, that Hassan  Hattab was executed by his llieutenants because of showing signs of regret.

On 03/22/2007 Hassan  Hattab was sentenced to death in Algeria for crimes he committed during the 90s’.

On 09/22/2007 Hassan  Hattab surrendered to the ALGERIAN authorities and blamed “MAGHREB al-Qaeda” as wanted to turn Algeria into "a second Iraq".
