– FINSBURY PARK MOSQUE
Finsbury Park Mosque is located in Northern London, UK. It was built in 1990 but changed radically at the early 2000 when Abu Hamza al-Masri was appointed the Imam of the Mosque. He was considered a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.
Abu Hamza al-Masri preached a very radical interpretation of Islam and gathered around him a group of local young frustrated Muslims. Very soon members of Finsbury Park Mosque were involved in Islamic Jihad and terror all over the world.
* Zacarias Moussaoui – was arrested on 08/17/2001 in USA.
* Richard Reid the “Shoe Bomber” – was arrested on 12/22/2001 on flight 63 from Paris, France, to Miami airport.
* Feroz Abbasi – was arrested in Aghahnistan in 12/2001 and released from Guantanamo on 01/25/2005.
* Amar Makhlulif– was arrested in Heathrow, UK, in 02/2001 while attempting to travel to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with a forged passport.
Although the Mosque and Abu Hamza al-Masri were under surveillance there was no direct proof that these people and others were incited or recruited to Global Jihad in the Mosque or by the Imam.
Only after the arrest of Kamel Bourgass, another frequent prayer in Finsbury Park Mosque, on 01/13/2003 in connection with the Ricin Plot , the police and MI5, the internal British Security service, obtained enough evidence to connect directly Finsbury Park Mosque and Abu Hamza al-Masri to Islamic terror activity.
On 01/20/2003 the British police raided the Mosque and found hundreds of passports, credit cards and identity cards stolen or forged that, as the police believed, were used for terror activity. The police also arrested 6 men from Algeria and a Somali that stayed in UK illegally and lived inside the Mosque. Abu Hamza al-Masri himself was removed from his office as the Imam of the Mosque on 02/04/2003 and replaced by a moderate mainstream Imam.
Today (04/2007) Finsbury Park Mosque is no longer a source of extremism in the Muslim local community but members from the Mosque that attended the period of Abu Hamza al-Masri are still engaged in terror.
