– 16 KILLED IN IRAQ’S EARLY VOTE

Iraqi police said nine people have been killed, on Thursday 03/04/2010, in two suicide bombings, bringing the daily death toll in Iraq’s capital to 16 as hundreds of thousands across the country took part in early voting ahead of Sunday’s nationwide vote. According to the AP, the officials said bombers wearing suicide belts targeted Iraqi security forces in both attacks.

These suicide blasts took place after an explosion in a crowded market earlier Thursday killed seven people.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were expected to take part in the early voting, a one-day session designed for those who might not be able to get to the polls Sunday 03/07/2010. Early voters include detainees, hospital patients and military and security personnel who will be working election day.

“The special voting has started and the turnout is good,” said Karim al-Tamimi, an official at the Independent High Electoral Commission which oversees the voting (see – IRAQ-Entangling).
