– ISRAELI EMBASSY ATTACKED IN MAURITANIA
In the last year MAGHREB al-Qaeda increased its activity in Mauritania and the public atmosphere turned against the diplomatic relations between Mauritania and Israel.
The next day, on 02/02/2008, the Mauritanian police arrested 3 suspects in Gawiya village, just East of the capital Nouakchott. The Mauritanian authorities hinted that the target of the attack was not the Israeli embassy but the nearby restaurant where 3 people were wounded and the shootout is related to crime gangs’ rivalry and not to the Israeli embassy or Al Qaeda.
Later on the day, MAGHREB al-Qaeda issued a written statement, distributed through fax to local media and newspapers offices in which the organization claimed responsibility for the attack on the Israeli embassy in Mauritania.
The statement said MAGHREB al-Qaeda had carried out the assault in response to Israeli policies in the Gaza Strip.
On 02/08/2008 the Mauritanian police announced the arrest of 7 more suspects, including an Algerian citizen, in committing the attack. The suspects are said to have been in possession of firearms and stolen cars.
On 02/19/2008 all 7 suspects in the attack, including two Tunisian citizens, were released because “lack of proof”, as the court put it.
