Two days after Jarallah Omar’s assassination, on 12/30/2002, Abed Abd al-Razzaq Kamel, 30, killed three American health professionals working for a Southern Baptist mission hospital in Jibal, South Yemen, 125 miles south of the capital, Sanaa. The victims were Hospital administrator William E. Koehn, business manager Kathleen A. Gariety, and physician Martha C. Myers were killed and pharmacist Donald W. Caswell was injured in the early morning attack. Yemen claimed that Abed Abd al-Razzaq Kamel plotted his attack with Ali Ahmad Jarallah. Abed Abd al-Razzaq Kamel claimed he belonged to a group called Islamic Jihad.
On 05/15/2003, Abed Abd al-Razzaq Kamel was sentenced to death and executed on 02/27/2006.
On 12/12/2005 two Yemeni citizens Hizam Ali Hassan Al-Mass, 17, and Khaled Saleh Al-Halila, 18, were charged in court for an attempt to assassinate the US Ambassador to Yemen Edmund J. Hull by a hand grenade. They were arrested following the Abyan-Operation in 03/2004.
Yemen’s military intelligence chief Brig. Ali Sayani survived an assassination attempt in Sanaa, the Central Customs office and close to the Italian embassy. on Monday 04/25/2005. Security sources said the attacker tossed a hand grenade inside Ali Sayani’s car, but his bodyguards managed to throw it back before it detonated. A bystander was killed in the explosion and few others were wounded.
