– TERROR NETWORK DISMANTLED IN U.A.E
United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities earlier this year, probably in 05/2009, quietly broke up a major terrorist ring affiliated with Al Qaeda that had plotted to blow up targets in Dubai, the Washington Times claimed, on Thursday 09/17/2009.
According to these officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the incident, UAE authorities found evidence that the terrorists had conducted video surveillance of targets in Dubai including Dubai Towers, which will be the tallest building in the world when it is completed in 12/2009.
The officials also said the plotters had designated suicide bombers for the operations, but had not yet made so-called martyrdom videos.
A spokeswoman for the UAE Embassy in Washington said the embassy “doesn’t comment on internal security matters”
Present and former USa officials described the plan to target the towers and several other high profile locations in the country as a significant shift in how Al Qaeda operates in the Emirates.
Earlier this week initial reports claimed the terror network was affiliated to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and that eight people, including Syrians and Palestinians, had been brought in for questioning two months ago (07/2009).
Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim told Asharq Al-Awsat, an Arabic newspaper based in London, on Tuesday 09/15/2009, that “these claims are unfounded and completely false.” He stressed that the news “is completely fabricated.”
Notes – Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is located on the narrowest point of the Hormuz Straits between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. There are 110,000 legal Iranians living in the UAE and according to the former Iranian ambassador to the UAE, Hamid Reza Asefi, the number of Iranians living in the UAE is over 400,000.
It is certain that Iran is preparing itself to a possible confrontation with USA or Israel and is building an infrastructure to close the Hormuz Straits to any oil flow from Arab countries to the worlds markets. There is no doubt that Iran is relying, at least partially, on the Iranian community in the UAE. It is most likely that Iranian cells, supplied by Iranian weapons and explosives are monitoring, constantly, strategic possible targets in the UAE for such a scenario.
