– 6 UNIFIL SOLDIERS KILLED IN LEBANON
Six Spanish soldiers, three of them of Colombian citizenship, who served in UN force in South Lebanon – UNIFIL were killed on Sunday evening, 06/24/2007, at about 18:00 local time. Other two soldiers were critically wounded.
The soldiers were killed in an armored vehicle during a patrol in the Eastern section of South Lebanon, near the Shiite town of Al -Khiam, about 3 km north to the Israeli village Metula, when a car bomb, driven by a suicide bomber, exploded close to the vehicle. The road was in use, routinely, by UNIFI”L and there is no doubt that the attack was premeditated.
Hizbullah strongly denied any connection to the event.
For the last five weeks, the Lebanese army has been battling militants from the Fatah al-Islam group in North LEBANON and there is a constant effort by Islamic Palestinian militants to broaden the conflict to other places in LEBANON. It is most likely that the explosion is linked to the internal turmoil in Lebanon (see – LEBANESE crisis ).
