– THE ISLAMIC KILLING SEASON

On 01/17/2008 afternoon a suicide bomber attacked Shiaa worshipers in Baquba during the Ashura rally and Killed 10 people.  Baquba is about 65 km North-East of Baghdad, in the troubled Diyala province. Ashura is the holiest day in the Shiaa belief and commemorates the killing of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the southern Iraqi city of Karbala, by the armies of Sunni caliph Yazid in 680AD.

The attack came a day after a woman blew herself up near a Shiaa mosque in the same Diyala province, killing 11.

Just few hours before the Baquba attack, in another part of the world, In Peshawar, Pakistan, another suicide bomber attacked at a Shiaa Mosque killing 10 people more.

The Ashura rally, when large number of Shiites gathered in the streets and the Mosques are overcrowded, became in the last years, after The 9/11, the Killing season for Sunnite Militants and a golden opportunity to kill Shiites. It is, in the eyes of Sunni radicals, the time to purify Islam from heresy from within, as they refer the Shiaa.

In Iraq and in Pakistan such attacks flared large scale sectarian violence with many more killed in reprisal counter attacks. (See – ISLAMIC BROTHERHOOD )

The last attacks emphasizes that Islam in its radical form is a substantial threat to Islam itself, to Muslims, to Muslim countries, communities  and regimes, to any prospect of living in peace and to any chance of economical prosperity. Al Qaeda ideology is a much grater threat to Islam then to the Christian or Jews.

Military campaigns or political alliances are limited in containing the Al Qaeda phenomena. The resistance to Al Qaeda should come from within the Islam and the battle ground should be manned with Imams, Preachers and ordinary Muslims. Until it will happen the Islam will continue to bleed.
