– 37 ROCKETS ON ISRAEL’S SHDEROT
During Friday 02/08/2008, a barrage of 33 Qassam rockets was fired from Gaza into ISRAELI territory, mainly on Shderot and its surrounding area. 10 of the rockets fell in a single grapeshot on the evening. One of the rockets hit directly a living room while the family was dinning in the adjacent room. 3 people were lightly wounded.
More the 1000 Qassam rockets were fired from Gaza to Israel since the Hamas took over the control on Gaza in 07/2007.
Spokesmen for the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) in Gaza strip, which committed the shelling, threatened people of Shderot and Ashkelon to leave the two towns “for their own safety because the worst is yet to come”. ( See – Gaza Threat )
The barrage was excused by an earlier ISRAELI incursion to the Northern part of Gaza Strip in an attempt to minimize the daily rocket shelling of ISRAELI villages around Gaza on the previous 3 days, which added up to 18 a day in average. In the incursion the ISRAELI forces exposed an underground tunnel system with special concrete reinforced holes from which some of the rockets were fired, so ISRAELI reconnaissance can not observe, trace and alert the army of any preparations before the rocket launching.
Israel, which supplies 65% of the electricity to Gaza and most of the basic food, medicines and water decided that each week, while the Qassam shelling is going on, horrifying a large ISRAELI population, the electricity supply to Gaza will be cut in 1.5%.
The decision came after ISRAELI Supreme Court ruled out that HAMAS is in effective control of Gaza and de facto a sovereign. HAMAS was elected by a Palestinian majority, and is implementing efficiently its responsibility on the local population in various fields of life. HAMAS is preventing all kinds of armed gangs to carry weapons and to bother the civilian population, effectively cracked down on drug trafficking, which was a major problem in Gaza, foiled, with an internal security service, all kinds of attempts to attack or undermine the HAMAS regime or assassinate its senior leadership. Moreover, the HAMAS is devoted to the destruction of Israel and the armed struggle as the only means. Hamas is, indeed, encouraging all factions to continue the daily shelling by supplying, if there is a shortage, of more Qassam rockets. There is no judicial precedent that a country is obliged to supply Electricity and other needs to a sovereign-like political identity that declared, practically, a war against Israel. (See – GAZA Blackout )
Already human right organizations in Israel and in the world began to protest and described the cut of electricity to Gaza Strip as a collective punishment of innocent civilians in Gaza, as if there is no responsibility in Gaza that can make the decision to stop the unprovoked daily shelling of another innocent civilian population – in Israel.
Indeed, on 02/09/2008 evening, grapeshot of 4 Qassam rockets critically wounded two brothers in Shderot.
