– 33 KILLED IN BALAD, IRAQ
On 02/10/2008 after noon, at about 16:30, a car bomb, driven by a suicide bomber, exploded on an Iraqi army checkpoint in the entrance to the local market in the town of Balad, about 80 km North of Baghdad.
33 people were killed, more then 40 wounded some buildings have collapsed and people have been reported missing since the Balad explosion in the heartland of Sunnite region.
In another event at least 15 people were killed, including 10 suspected Al Qaeda men, in clashes with local security units in northern Iraq in Sinjar, a small town 400 km northwest of Baghdad.
The attack occurred amide the visit of US defense secretary Robert Gates in Iraq for talks on US troop levels in the light of what the US sees as the improving security situation in Iraq (See – SWITCHING SIDES ).
