– TURKEY’S SWISSHOTEL CRISIS
On 04/22/2001 at 23:30, a group of 13 armed Chechens led by Muhammed Tokcan took over the Luxury Swisshotel in Taqsim Square, in the heart of Istanbul, the commercial capital and the largest city in Turkey, and took about 120 guests and hotel personnel hostage.
The attack came a week after Chechen rebels hijacked a Russian passenger aircraft from Istanbul to Moscow and diverted it to Medina in Saudi Arabia (see – Medina Hijacking ).
The next day, on 04/23/2001 noon, the Hostage takers gave themselves up, surrendered to the Turkish police and released all the hostages. The Chechens claimed their only intention was to draw attention to the war in Chechnya and the atrocities committed by the Russians there.
About 25,000 Chechens lived in Istanbul and western Turkey in 2001. Some 80 Caucasus organizations operate in Turkey and many have been active in promoting Chechen “independence.”
