Security forces in Pakistan said, on Thursday10/05/2006, they have found two 107 mm Russian manufactured rockets and a rocket launcher near the parliament building in the capital, Islamabad and had been defused by bomb experts. The parliament was not in session.
The two rockets were rigged with mobile phones and primed to fire toward the parliament and were discovered by a construction worker.
“We have detained a few people for questioning,” an unnamed police official told. The parliament was not in session.
One report said that the rocket and the rocket launcher were found in a patch of green across the road from parliament main government buildings. They were recovered a day after a small explosion in a park not far from President Pervez Musharraf’s army residence in Rawalpindi. The military has dismissed suggestions that the blast was related to Gen Musharraf.
Three days later, on Saturday 10/07/2006, two more rockets of the same type were found and defused in Shakarparian Hills overlooking the ISI headquarters, along the Kashmir Highway, which connects Islamabad with Rawalpindi, the garrison city. According to Indian newspapers the rockets were aimed toward ISI (Pakistani Intelligence) headquarter. No one has so far claimed responsibility for planting the rockets.
The police arrested, on Monday 10/16/2006, arrested three suspects, including the son of a retired army brigadier. The arrests were made on information gleaned from eight Islamic militants who were already in police custody for their involvement in the three attempted rocket attacks, city police chief said.
A senior security official identified the three as Khalil Wayin, the son of retired army brigadier Dural Rashid, Ali Ahmad and Munir Ahmad. The rockets were brought to Islamabad from FATA tribal area of Waziristan.
