– NAIROBI BLAST
On Monday 06/11/2007 at about 08:00, a small bomb exploded in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, killing one person and wounding about 30 others outside a city centre cafe. The explosion occurred close to the site of the 08/07/1998 bombing.
Police in Kenya said the next day they arrested three suspects. The police played down the incident and said the blast was “extremely small”. Witnesses say two men left the parcel with the explosive next to a shoe shiner before running away from the scene.
Torn pieces of the Koran were found near a body outside the cafe but it was not clear if they are linked to this attack.
Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said they had discounted earlier reports that a group of Somali men near the scene of the blast – may have been involved. It is not clear whether it was Islamists or member of an outlaw sect known as ‘Mungiki’ who were behind the bombing.
