– SWAT MILITAN LEADERS ARRESTED

* Sufi Mohammad, the cleric who brokered the Swat Truce II, has been arrested along with his aides, Pakistan and India media have said, on Friday 06/05/2009.

He was reportedly arrested during a raid in the town of Amandara in Malakand district along with five leaders of his banned organization – Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi. Sufi Mohammad was released the last time from jail, on Tuesday 04/22/2008, as a gesture of reconciliation

Pakistan’s government gave no confirmation of Sufi Muhammad’s arrest but the military said his deputy, Mohammad Alam, and his spokesman, Ameer Izzat, had been, indeed, arrested. Both were killed on, Saturday 06/06/2009, when the convoy in which they were transferred was ambushed by the Local Taliban (at least that is what the army claimed).

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) information minister, told the AFP news agency that the aides were “holed up in the compound of a seminary when they were arrested along with a few militants”.

Cleric Mohammad Wahab and three Afghan fighters were also arrested when a meeting of terrorists was in progress there, Major-General Athar Abbas, the military’s chief spokesman, said.

Richard Holbrooke, the US special envoy, who visited refugee camps in the Swat District on Thursday to see the humanitarian crisis first-hand, urged European and Muslim nations to help avert a humanitarian crisis. “The reconstruction phase is going to cost as much as the humanitarian phase” he said.

Holbrooke is scheduled to meet Pakistani leaders on Friday to discuss the next phase of holding, securing and rehabilitating Swat after it has been cleared of the Tehrik-e-Taleban.

Sufi Mohammad was rearrested, the forth time, on Sunday 07/26/2009, in Peshawar after being warned not to hold meetings there for encouraging terrorism and violence, officials said.
