* Saleem Abbassi, 42, an Algerian national with suspected terror links and wanted by the Interpol since 1993 was arrested at the Chennai airport, Southern India, when he arrived from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital last week, officials said on Sunday 06/21/2009.
Saleem Abbassi is linked to the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), a rebel group that tried to overthrow the Algerian government in 1993. He was allegedly involved in the bombing of Houari Boumedienne airport in Algiers in 08/1992 that killed nine people and injured 100.
Saleem Abbassi fled the country and lived in Europe for a long time. However, Saleem Abbassi told the Chennai police that he was a businessman and was on his way to Bangalore to invest in renewable solar energy projects. Saleem Abbassi was convicted in 06/1997 for smuggling arms and false passports for Algerian rebels working abroad.
