On 07/15/2005, during a robbery of a gasoline station in Los Angeles, two convicted criminals – Gregory Patterson, born in 1984, and Levar Washington, born in 1980, were arrested by the police.
The two have a long criminal record of robberies and other violent crimes. Their investigation revealed that while Levar Washington served time in jail he converted to Islam and came under the influence of Kevin Lamar James, born in 1976, who was arrested in 1997 and formed in jail an Islamic radical group named Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh – ( The Group of the True Islam). Kevin Lamar James is still (12/2007) behind bars.
After Levar Washington was released on parole in early 2005, he recruited Gregory Patterson and Hammad Riaz Samana, born in 1984, from Pakistani descent, to the Jamiyyat Ul-Islam.
Hammad Riaz Samana, was arrested shortly after the arrest of Gregory Patterson and Levar Washington. Hammad Riaz Samana immigrated to the USA from Pakistan and is a legal permanent resident. He is the only one of the four not born in America.
In the police search in a South Los Angeles apartment the suspects shared, following the arrests, the police found descriptions of USA National Guard bases, Synagogues in Los Angeles and Sacramento and the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles.
The four suspects: Gregory Patterson, Levar Washington, Kevin Lamar James and Hammad Riaz Samana were officially charged on 08/31/2005 of conspiring “to levy a war against the government of the United States through terrorism.”
According to the indictment, the synagogue attacks were planned for the Jewish high holydays, which began on 10/03/2005, “in order to maximize the number of casualties to be inflicted.”
On 12/15/2007 Kevin Lamar James and Levar Washington pleaded guilty. Kevin Lamar James faces 20 years in prison while Levar Washington faces a 25-year sentence.
Prosecutors said that a third man, Gregory Patterson, was expected to plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit terrorism on 12/17/2007. The fourth member of the group, Hammad Riaz Samana, was deemed unfit to stand trial and is currently (12/2007) receiving psychiatric care at a federal prison.
* On Friday 03/06/2009, Kevin Lamar James was sentenced to yet another 16 years imprisonment for plotting terror attacks in Los Angeles.
