– LIBYA ISLAMIC FIGHTING GROUP
Al-Jam’a al-Islamiyyah al-Muqatilah – The Libya Islamic Fighting Group (L.I.F.G) was formed in 1995 by Islamic militants who returned to Libya from Afghanistan, Chechnya and Bosnia and, on the base of few Islamic cells based around Benghazi, in eastern Libya, which were engaged in several encounter and shootout with the Libyan security forces in the 80s’. The aim of L.I.F.G was to overthrow Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his government who were considered Anti-Muslims. The Libya Islamic Fighting Group (L.I.F.G) failed to mobilize or to gain substantial support among the LibyaN masses.
Among the Libyans, who returned incognito to Libya in 1994 from Afghanistan, were Abu Laith al-Libi, Abdelhakim Belhaj and Noman Benotman as the financier. They soon attempted to organize a coup against Muammar Gaddafi and to kill him. The coup was exposed in the beginning of 1996. Many activists were arrested. Abu Laith al-Libi and others managed to flee Libya and joined the Global Jihad in Afghanistan and Iraq after USA invasion in 04/2003. The organization in Libya since 1996 is estimated in few dozens, who find protection among tribal leaders in the spacious empty desert of Libya.
In 2003 Libya Islamic Fighting Group (L.I.F.G) was designated by USA and UN as an Islamic terror organization.
On 11/03/2007 As-Sahab, Al Qaeda’s media arm, posted in the web a 28 minutes audio speech, in which Al Qaeda acting leader, Ayman Al Zawahiri, presented Abu Laith al-Libi as the leader of the Libyan Al Qaeda’s wing and declared that the “Honorable members of the Libya Islamic Fighting Group announce that they are joining the Al Qaeda group to continue the march of their brothers”. (See – LIBYAN GROUP )
Today (03/2008) Libya Islamic Fighting Group (L.I.F.G) is nothing but an ephemeral group with very little support in Libya and most of the activists scattered in the Muslim World – some of them in MAGHREB al-Qaeda , Al Qaeda and other affiliated groups.
