-ATAUR RAHMAN SUNNY

 

 

Ataur  Rahman Sunny alias Sajid was the younger brother of Maulana Abdur Rahman the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen –JMB leader in Bangladesh, served as a senior military wing commander in the organization and one of the seven Shura council members – the leading executive board of JMB .

In early 2002 the first conference of the commanders of Jamat-ul- Mujahedin was held at Khetlal in Joypurhat. During that conference local police arrested for a short while 17 terrorists, including Ataur  Rahman Sunny, in connection with an accidental blast in Dinajpur. After this incident the commanders of Jamat-ul- Mujahedin went underground and extended their terrorist activities around the country.

In early 2003, a team of JMB operatives led by Ataur  Rahman Sunny carried out a bomb blast at the shrine of Faillah Pagla in Safipur district killing a few people and injuring many. The attack was carried out with bombs made by Shakil and Mollah Omar. JMB members: Shahid, Maruf and five others took part in the attack.

Ataur  Rahman Sunny was arrested on 12/14/2005 by the Bangladeshi elite police unit RAB Rapid Action Battalion. Ataur  Rahman Sunny was put on trial in 05/2006 for numerous terror activities, including the detonation of 7 from about 500 small home made bombs, which were scattered at 300 locations in 50 cities and towns across Bangladesh on 08/17/2005 (see – BANGLADESH Bombings). Ataur  Rahman Sunny was accused also for a bomb blast on 10/03/2005 within the Laxmipur court premises, which killed one person and for killing two judges in 2005.

Ataur  Rahman Sunny was sentenced to death and executed on 03/30/2007, simultaneously with five other top Jamat-ul- Mujahedeen leaders, including his older brother Maulana Abdur Rahman and Bangla Bhati.
