* Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen (the Muiahidin society) – JMB is one of the two main Radical Islamic semi political movements in Bangladesh. The organization was founded in 1998 in Dhaka by Maulana Abdur Rahman and Bangla Bhati, nick name Siddiqul Islam (Friend of Islam), who were arrest in 03/2006. Both were former members of the Islami Chhatra Shibir (BICS). Ataur Rahman Sunny, the brother of Maulana Abdur Rahman, headed the military wing of the organization.
Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen aim was to replace the semi democratic state of Bangladesh with an Islamic state based on Shariaa (Islamic law) and preached a Salafist doctrine of Islam. Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen referred to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan as a right model for Bangladesh. At the beginning Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen preferred political methods but, with time, the organization turned to terror. The organization is one of a number of similar organizations that flared in Bangladesh in the, 90s’ such as the HUJI-B .
Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen was organized in four territorial divisions and a small cadre of full time employees. In its peak, in 2002, JMB operated a network of about 100,000 volunteers or partly paid sympathizers. According to Bangladeshi intelligence sources the organization had also a list of about 2000 potential suicide bombers – The Suicide Brigade.
The organization became noticed widely in Bangladesh when on 05/20/2001 25 petrol bombs and documents detailing the activities of the organization were discovered and eight of its members were arrested in Parbatipur, Bangladesh.
After few attacks on NGO’s* offices in Bangladesh in 02/2005 Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen was officially banned by the government of Bangladesh. However the organization went on illegally with its activity.
On 08/17/2005 500 small home made bombs were scattered at 300 locations in 50 cities and towns across Bangladesh, detonated within the space of 30 minutes. Dhaka international airport, government buildings and major hotels were targeted. There were 50 injured and two fatalities (see – BANGLADESH Bombings).
On 11/14/2005 a bomb placed by a JMB militant killed judges, lawyers, policemen and common people in Jhalakathi in South Bangladesh.
* NGO – Non Governmental Organizations refers to secular civilian volunteers organizations. NGOs are concerned with welfare, ecology, environment and education.
