On 03/30/2008 Islamic opposition fighters from the Islamic Front in Somalia (IFS) took over Buulo Burte from pro government Somali troops, backed by the Ethiopian army. Buulo Burte is in Hiran region in central Somalia about 200 km North of Mogadishu.

Buulo Burte fell into the hands of the alliance Islamic opposition just a week after fighters took control of the Jowhar town and region, 90km north of the capital. After freeing prisoners and routing government forces, the fighters, typically to guerilla warfare, withdrew voluntarily after chasing away government troops. (See – Ethiopian-Somali War ) .
