– 1600 BASRA POLICEMEN DESERTED
More then 1600 policemen left there duty during the recent fighting at Baדra from the end of 03/2008. More then 10% of the force engaged in the clashes. It is fair to assume that the motivation of the other soldiers and policemen, those who stayed in office, was an enigma. In many cases the soldiers and junior officers just evaded the orders. According to Maj Gen Abdulkarim Khalaf from the Interior Ministry About 1,600 officers have either been discharged, detained or are wanted for court martial for dereliction of duty,
It almost obvious that the Iraqi army and police are not able to cope, by themselves, with major crisis and restoring law and order in Iraq.
In a statement of the Shiite Cleric Moqtada Sadr, published on Tuesday 04/08/2008, he demands the Iraqi government to protect the public from “the booby traps and American militias”, referring to the 130 semi-military Awakening Council Sunnite militias backed by the USA army, or he would end the unilateral truce.
