– HUNDREDS DETAINED IN SAUDI ARABIA

On Tuesday 06/25/2008, the Saudi Arabia Interior Ministry made public the arrest of 701 Islamic terror suspects in the kingdom since the beginning of 2008. 181 of the suspects were released due to lack of evidence and other 520 remained in custody.

The interior ministry statement read out on Saudi television said those detained were of various nationalities and were part of a wider plot managed from abroad. Those organizing people to come from abroad had taken “advantage of the facilities granted to the Muslim faithful to come to Mecca for the annual pilgrimage or to do the omra”. –  (Omra – minor pilgrimage).

The ministry said one group of suspects was detained close to an oil export terminal and major petrochemical plants in Yanbu, on the Red Sea coast which was already, in 05/2004, a subject to a terror attack (YANBU ATTACK). Another alleged cell, which included Africans, was broken up in Eastern Saudi Arabia after trying to gather information about oil facilities. One cell member was said to have been found with a taped message from Ayman Al Zawahiri, the acting leader of Al Qaeda and the prime suspect of orchestrating terror attacks in Saudi Arabia.  .

The arrests were the largest ever carried out in Saudi Arabia in relation with Islamic militancy and terror.
