– 10 TERROR SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN INDONESIA
On Wednesday 07/02/2008, the Indonesian anti-terror police unite arrested in Western Indonesia 10 Islamic militants, headed by Mohamed Hasan Saynudin, a Singaporean known as Abu Hazam, and seized caches of 22 powerful bombs packed with bullets in Palembang, a coastal city in South Sumatra, including 10 that were primed to explode. The largest bomb was weighing 5 kg.
The suspects initially planned to attack tourist resorts on Sumatra islands, similar to the Bali 02 Bombings, and had staked out a backpacker cafe in the tourist town of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra and was reportedly eyeing Western targets in Jakarta. Later they changed their minds after realizing too many Indonesian lives could be lost. According to the Indonesian police the group was considering, instead, an attack in the Capital Jakarta.
Abu Hazam allegedly had close ties with Southeast Asia’s most wanted terror suspect, Noordin Mohammed Top, the former senior INDONESIAN JI activist, who is leading a faction of his own.
Abu Hazam, also known as Omar and Taslim, received military training in Afghanistan and is also an associate of Mas Selamat Kastari, the alleged leader of INDONESIAN JI’s Singapore branch who escaped from prison there on 02/27/2008 and is still at large, reportedly in Indonesia.
The arrest were carried out, probably, due to full cooperation between Singapore and Indonesia intelligence and police apparatuses.
The detained militants allegedly planned to assassinate an American teacher, identified as Samuel, and worked in the small town of Sekayu, in Sumatra island, Indonesia. The plot supposed to avenge the upcoming executions of the Bali ‘02 Bombings perpetrators by attacking the Supreme Court, a top Indonesian anti-terrorism official said on Monday 07/28/2008.
