– 4 KILLED IN GAZA CLASHES
On Saturday 08/02/2008 dawn, the Hamas Operational Force, known as the “Tanphizya”, raided the stronghold of the Hilles clan in Shajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza city. The powerful Hilles clan is considered as affiliated to the Fatah movement, the Hamas’s rival, and the last clan in Gaza which operated a militia of its own. Suliman Hilles was the last Fatah general commander in Gaza Strip of the “General Security” apparatus – actually the Palestinian army, before the Hamas took over Gaza strip in 07/2007.
Officially the Tanphizya were looking after suspect perpetrators of the Gaza beach bombing from Friday 07/25/2008 (Gaza 07.25.08), which caused the death of 5 Hamas activists and a five-year-old passer-by girl. When the Hilles militia men resisted the search, the Hamas opened indiscriminate fire on the resident compound of the clan and took the stronghold by force. 4 people were killed in the clashes, 60 people were hurt, including seven reported to be in serious condition.
Hundreds of clan members were arrested. 188, including 22 wounded, fled to Israel where the wounded received medical care, and the Hilles militia, the last armed Fatah stronghold completely dismantled. The operation in Shajaiyeh completed the overtaking of Gaza Strip by Hamas and eliminated the last meaningful opposition to Hamas in Gaza.
A clan leader and senior Fatah member, Ahmed Hilles, is among those allowed into Israel.
