Suspected pro-Taliban fighters have attacked with rockets, on Monday 08/25/2008 dawn, the home of the brother of a Pakistani regional senator in behalf of the ruling party PPP – Waqar Ahmed Khan in Pakistan’s Swat District, NWFP, killing at least three members of his family and seven guards, police say. The brother, two nephews and five other family members were killed in the attack,
Pakistani troops killed up to 35 rebels in valley over the weekend after a suicide bombing and other attacks left seven people dead, including three policemen.
Last year, Maulana Fazlullah, pro-Taliban leader, launched a campaign to ensure the implementation of Islamic law in the region. Since then, there has been heavy fighting in the region.
Asif Ali Zardari, Benazir Bhutto’s widower, the head of the ruling PPP party and the leading candidate to replace Pervez Musharraf as Pakistan’s president, said, in a BBC interview, that Taliban have “the upper hand” and should be put on the list of banned organizations. He also described the Taliban militancy as an insurgency against Pakistan legitimate authorities.
