– THE THREAT FROM SYRIA’S AL-SAFIRA COMPOUND
–
The village of Al-Safira, about just 25 k”m South-East to Aleppo in Northern Syria.. The main chemical depot of the Syrian Army is also located there along with other manufacturing installations for chemical ammunition. Among al-Safirah’s products is sarin, the lethal nerve gas that the regime is now feared to be deploying in its bid to cling to power. Al-Safirah is the biggest of its kind in the Middle East, and the fourth largest in the world. It is also a huge warehouse for conventional munitions and weaponry.
On 07/28/2015, as part of a large scale rebels offensive to seize control on Aleppo Province, al-Safurah came under attack by Syrian rebels from coalition of Islamist group, the victorious Coalition, led by Jabhat al-Nusra. the battle near al-Safirah compound shows just how close such weapons could be to falling into al-Qaeda’s hands.
Indeed Last week, Washington said for the first time that it had evidence of Sarin being used in “small” amounts during combat operations in Syria, a move that President Barack Obama has long warned is a “red line” that President Bashar al-Assad must not cross.
There is the possibility of the West’s worst-case scenario unfolding – Syria’s weapons of mass destruction falling into al-Qaeda’s control. More than 500 times as toxic as cyanide and deadly in milligram-sized doses, a single canister of sarin could unleash carnage if released on a Tube network in London or New York.
Al-Safirah already came under heavy attack in 10/2013, partially destroyed and not repaired or rebuilt since. The situation there is not clear and so the situation of the chemical means and stocks.
