– DAMASCUS CHIMICAL ATTACK

Syrian government forces have carried out, on Wednesday 08/21/2013, at about 02:30, when most people in the targeted areas were still sleeping,  a “poisonous gas” attack in suburbs of the capital, Damascus, leaving hundreds of people dead. According to initial indications the gas was Sarin nerve gas.

Activists said regime forces fired “rockets with poisonous gas heads”, the shelling was intense and hit the eastern suburbs of Zamalka, Arbin and Ein Tarma (see -SYRIAN DILEMA). The gas rockets were fired from the barrack of the 4th division in Mount Kassioun, in the North-West outskirts of Damascus (see – Qassioun Sootout ).

According to USA Secretary of State John Kerry’s remarks on Syria,  on 08/30/2013, and an unclassified US intelligence report:

* A. Three days before the attack, the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons personnel were on the ground in the area, making preparations. Syrian regime elements were told to prepare for the attack by putting on gas masks and taking precautions associated with chemical weapons.

* B. The rockets containing gas were launched only from regime-controlled areas and went only to opposition-controlled or contested neighborhoods.

* C. Doctors and the nurses who treated them didn’t report a scratch, not a shrapnel wound, not a cut, not a gunshot sound.

* D. A senior regime official who knew about the attack confirmed that chemical weapons were used by the regime, reviewed the impact, and actually was afraid that they would be discovered.

* E. at least 1,429 Syrians were killed in this attack, including at least 426 children (see also – Hama Massacre ).

The attack triggered a worldwide political crisis as USA pledged to keep its “Red line” – to respond and punish the usage of Weapon of Mass Destruction – WMD and especially  chemical weapon.

* According to the UN Special report, released on 09/16/2013, UN investigators found “clear and convincing evidence” that chemical weapons were used on a relatively large scale in an attack last month in Syria that killed hundreds of people. “The environmental, chemical and medical samples we have collected provide clear and convincing evidence that surface-to-surface rockets containing the nerve agent sarin were used … in the Ghouta area of Damascus” on August 21 the report said. But it  did not say who launched the attack in rebel-held Damascus suburbs.
