– PHILIPPINES PM WAHAB AKBAR ASSASSINATED

* Wahab Akbar, 47, a member of the political wing of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), how is representing southern Basilan island, near Mindanao and a MILF stronghold, was assassinated on 11/13/2007 evening in an explosion in the Southern wing of the Philippine parliament.

A powerful bomb killed Wahab Akbar, his driver and a by passer, just minutes after its evening session ended around 8pm (1200 GMT in the parking lot.  10 more people were jnjured. The investigators were not calling the blast a terror attack but an assassination, probably because the bomb attack was not meant to kille indiscriminately innocent people but specifically a certain one.

Wahab Akbar was suspected of knowing the leaders of the Basilan-based Abu Sayyaf and later having a falling out with the group’s commanders.  As the former governor of southern Basilan province, he had supported US-backed military operations on the island targeting the Abu Sayyaf.

On the other hand, on 07/31/2007 Wahab  Akbar, in a speech in the Parliament condemned and sharply criticized the Philippines military renewed offensive and the “militaristic approach” to achieve peace in Basilan.

The fact that the bomb was planted in the parking lot of the well protected Philippine Parliament raises many questions about the security procedures in the Parliament or about the identification of those behind the explosion and the assassination.
