– 11 EGYPTIAN PERSONNEL KILLED BY SUICIDE BOMBERS

Eleven people were killed by two explosions in the northern Sinai Peninsula in the town of Rafah on Wednesday morning, Israel Radio reported on 09/11/2013.

Most of the casualties were Egyptian soldiers and Ansar Bait al-Maqdas group affiliated with Al Qaeda took responsibility for the attacks, according to the report.

The statement appeared identical to an earlier statement by another Sinai-based group, Ansar Jerusalem, which claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on Egypt’s Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim (see – Naser-City Attempt).

Another 10 soldiers and seven civilians were wounded by the blasts outside the military intelligence headquarters in Rafah and at a nearby checkpoint. A military spokesman blamed “Islamist terrorist elements” for the violence.

The military has launched an offensive in the Sinai to deal with a rise in attacks since it ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 07/30/2013 (see – EGYPT’S III REVOLUTION).

On Tuesday, troops backed by helicopter gunships raided militant hideouts in the villages of al-Mahdiya and Naga Shabana, south of Rafah, killing nine people, arresting 10 others and seizing weapons and ammunition, military officials said.
