– PALESTINIAN ISLAMIC JIHAD

 

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)was formed in Gaza strip by Fathi Shaqaqi and Abd Al Aziz Awda in 1981, inspired by the IRANIAN Islamic revolution of 01/1979 led by Ayatollah Khomeini and similar groups in Egypt.  In the beginning The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) referred to itself as a branch of the EGYPTIAN Islamic Jihad .

The Ideology of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) was that the liberation of Palestine “from the river to the sea” and eradicating the Israeli State is only a part of the larger struggle – the Global Jihad. The final goal is a pan Arabic united Islamic state in the Middle East ruled by the Islamic law – Shariâa.

The Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) emerged as a local variation in the general context of Global Jihad, while the Hamas emerged as an Islamic version to the resistance against Israel although they have the same wish to erase Israel. Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) is significantly smaller than Hamas, numbering less then 1000 members, and lacks the wide social network that Hamas has.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) was the first Islamic movement to justify suicide attacks against Israel and was the vanguard to the phenomenon of suicide attacks as the main and most effective operational tool in the world wide Global Jihad.    

In 1988, the beginning of the first Palestinian uprising –the “Stones’ Intifada”, Fathi Shaqaqi was expelled by Israel to Lebanon. He quickly consolidates the Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) operational cooperation with the Hizbullah and located his headquarter in Damascus, Syria under the protection of the Syrian regime.  

 

* On 10/06/1995 , Fathi Shaqaqi was killed, probably by Mossad agents, in Malta. He was replaced by Ramadan Abdullah Shallah. It took about 5 years for the Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) to recover from the killing of Fathi Shaqaqi and to renew his attacks against Israel.  

 

In the second Palestinian upraising – the “Al-Aqsa Intifada”, which breached out in 09/2000, the Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) played a major role in committing suicide attacks in Israel. The organization rejects, ideologically, any negotiation or peace process with Israel and is increasing its attempts to carry out quality terror attacks each time that any possible negotiation with Israel is on the agenda.

The Palestinian Islamic  Jihad (PIJ) is funded by Iran, probably also by Syria, and by raising money in the Western world for foundations in which some of the money is channeled to terror activities. ( see – US PIJ Cell )
