– AL-QAEDA CONVICTED ACTIVITS – 09.26.05 – A

On 09/26/2005, 17 from 24 defendants in the Spanish Al-Qaeda trial, which was opened in Madrid on 04/21/2005, were convicted for forming an Al Qaeda network in Spain. They were sentenced for time in jail between 6 to 11 years. The 18th convict, Imad Yarkas, the leader of the network was sentenced for 27 years imprisonment.

A. Sentenced for 11 years imprisonment;

 

* Jasem  Mahboule is from SYRIAN descent. He fought in Bosnia before settling in SPAIN in 1996. Jasem  Mahboule married a Spanish woman, who converted, at his request, to Islam. The couple moved in 1999 into an attractive housing project in southern Madrid.  Jasem  Mahboule has three children. He trained twice in Afghanistan and traveled to Yemen on Al Qaeda business. Jasem  Mahboule was in almost daily relations with the network ringleader Imad Yarkas.  He is considered by the Spanish Security service to be one of the financiers of the Al Qaeda network in SPAIN. Jasem  Mahboule was arrested on 11/17/2001 and accused of possessing explosives and belonging to a terrorist group. 

 

* Osama  Darra, known as Abu Thabet, from SYRIAN descent, lives in Madrid, SPAIN. Osama  Darra fought in Bosnia before settling in SPAIN in 1996. He opened a discount audio and video store in Madrid and was a close associate of Jasem  Mahboule. Osama  Darra is considered to be one of the financiers of the Al Qaeda network in SPAIN. He is married and has children. Osama  Darra was arrested on 11/17/2001 and accused of possessing explosives and belonging to a terrorist group. 

B. Sentenced for 9 years imprisonment;

 

* Abdullah Khayata  Kattan, alias Abu Ibrahim, a SYRIAN citizen who fled to Jordan in late 2003 and was extradited to SPAIN from Jordan on 02/03/2004 due to a Spanish request from 09/27/2003. Abdullah Khayata  Kattan, who fought in Bosnia and Kurdistan, arrived to SPAIN from Bosnia in 1995 and is accused of leading the Al Qaeda cell in SPAIN in the years 1995-97 and providing material support to the Algerian Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat – (GSPC) cell in Spain.
