– AL-QAEDA CONVICTED ACTIVISTS 09.26.05 – C
On 09/26/2005, 17 from 24 defendants in the Spanish Al-Qaeda trial , which was opened in Madrid on 04/21/2005, were convicted of forming an Al Qaeda network in Spain. They were sentenced for time in jail between 6 to 11 years. The 18th convict, Imad Yarkas, the leader of the network was sentenced for 27 years imprisonment.
A. Sentenced for 8 years imprisonment;
* Sadik Merizak, a Spanish resident from Moroccan descent and a close associate of Abdelaziz Benyaich, was arrested on 09/2003 in connection with Tayssir Allouni’s Al Qaeda cell in Granada, Spain. He went to Afghanistan for a short period of training in Al Qaeda’s camp, probably in 1998. Although Sadik Merizak was sentenced in the Spanish Al-Qaeda trial on 09/26/2005 for 8 years imprisonment he was later acquitted from al charges in the Spanish High Court. Sadik Merizak he was released from jail on 04/07/2006.
* Abdelaziz Benyaich, the brother of Salahedin Benyaich, was born in Tanger, Morocco. He is a Spanish resident, who holds a French passport and a close associate of Sadik Merizak and Jamal Zougam – a leading suspect in the Madrid Trains Bombing. Abdelaziz Benyaich is wanted by the Moroccan authority for being involved in the Casablanca Bombings. He was arrested on 09/2003 in connection with Tayssir Allouni’s Al Qaeda cell in Granada, Spain. Although Abdelaziz Benyaich was sentenced in the Spanish Al-Qaeda trial on 09/26/2005 for 8 years imprisonment he was later acquitted from al charges in the Spanish High Court and was released from jail on 04/07/2006. On 05/2007 a Spanish judge signed an order to extradite Abdelaziz Benyaich back to Morocco. Today (10/2007) Abdelaziz Benyaich is fighting in court his possible extradition to Morocco.
* Said Chedadi a Spanish resident from Moroccan descent and the brother of Mohamed el-Hadi Chedadi (See – Madrid 04.07.04 ), who was arrested in 03/2004 in connection with the Madrid Trains Bombing. Said Chedadi was arrested in 11/2001 as member of the Al Qaeda network in Spain led by Imad Yarkas. Said Chedadi was well connected to many Islamic militant activists in Europe, including Jamal Zougam. He traveled with Imad Yarkas at least once, in 2000, to London to meet Abu Qatada and to raise money for Arab-Afghan ‘Mujahidin’ in Chechnya. Said Chedadi was found guilty in the Spanish Al-Qaeda Trial and was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment. He was released from jail on 01/24/2006, after 4.5 years, because the Spanish Supreme Court has been too slow in handling his case.
* Hajib Chaib Mohammed alias Najib was born in 1967 in Tangier and is a Spanish resident. Hajib Chaib Mohammed was arrested on 01/22/2002 in Barcelona for suspicions of possession of weapons and explosives, belonging to a terrorist group and conducting a propaganda campaign for Al Qaeda network in Spain.
Hajib Chaib Mohammed was found guilty in the Spanish Al-Qaeda trial and was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment. He was released from jail on 01/24/2006, after 4.5 years, because the Spanish Supreme Court has been too slow in handling his case.
