– IMAM BILAL PHILLIPS

 

Imam Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Phillips was born in Jamaica, on 01/07/1946,as Dennis Bradley Philips. Philips comes from a family of educators, as both his parents were teachers .and his grandfather was a Christian minister and Bible scholar in Jamaica.

Bilal Phillips’ familly immigrated to Canada and, in Canada, in 1972, he converted to Islam. In 1979 Bilal Phillips graduated the Islamic University of Medina, Saudi Arabia, and became an Imam, a preacher in a Mosque. His M.A. in Aqeedah (Islamic Theology) is from the King Saud univesity in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Imam Bilal Phillips continued his studies in different domains of Islam including 3 years in “Shariff Kabunsuan Islamic University“ in Cotabato, Mindanao, the Southern Philippines. Then Imam Bilal Phillips completed a PhD in Islamic Theology in the early 1990s in the Univversity of Wales.

In the first Gulf War in 1991 and soon after Imam Bilal Phillips, now based in Dubai, worked on a project, financed by Saudi Arabia, to encourage American soldiers to convert to Islam. In 1994 He founded the Islamic Information Center in Dubai which offered, since 2001, also a Bachelor degree from Umdurman University, in Khartoum Sudan, via the web, which they called the IOU – Islamic Online University. The IOU was closed after a year, probably as an outcome of The 9/11, and was reopened in 2007. In 2007 Imam Bilal Phillips became a professor in one of the Gulf Emirates. Imam Bilal Phillips is banned from preaching in most European countries.

On 02/23/2012, Imam Bilal Phillips was deported from Kenya soon after he landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday morning from Qatar. Anti terrorism police officers said they had received reports he was scheduled to preach and give lectures in various Mosques in Nairobi and Mombasa.
