The 21st Century Phenomenon

A Palestinian man driving a heavy wheeled tractor in a construction site in Jerusalem, Israel, was shot dead, on Thursday 03/05/2009 noon, after intentionally attacking a police car. Before he was shot, the man tried to tip over additional vehicles including a public bus at the Golomb intersection, near Jerusalem’s Malha Mall. Army Radio reported that the tractor driver was critically wounded immediately and died few minutes later, after he was shot, initially, by a by passer taxi driver. Then a policeman came with a M-16 and shot him dead. Two police officers were reportedly lightly injured in the attack.

An initial police investigation indicated that the tractor driver reached the intersection near the Teddy Stadium and managed to push a police vehicle for about 30 meters. After that, he tried to push the Police car  into a bus, but was blocked apparently by an electrical post.

The bus was full of girls dressed in Purim costumes en route to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital to cheer up patients in advance of the holiday. The attack is the third of its kind in less than a year.

* In the driver’s cabin police found an opened Quraan. The attacker was identified as Marei al-Radydah, 26, from Beit-Hanina, a Northern suburb of Jerusalem. He is married and a father of a child.  Marei al-Radydah is not an Israeli resident but a citizen of the Palestinian authority.

Police is investigated how Marei al-Radydah got his job as a tractor driver in West Jerusalem.
