– PAKISTAN- BOUND PLANE EVACUATED IN STOCKHOLM

Swedish police, on Saturday 09/25/2010, said they have detained a man on a Pakistan International Airlines plane that made an emergency landing in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, after Canadian authorities received a tip that a passenger was carrying explosives.

Police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said the man, described as a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, aged about 30, was detained as he was evacuated from the Boeing 777 jet along with other passengers at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport. It was not immediately clear if he was carrying any explosives.

Officials say there were 273 people on board the plane, which was bound from Toronto to Karachi (see also – Karachi 08.02.10) when the pilot asked to land in Stockholm.

Janne Hedlund, an official with the Stockholm police, said the plane was diverted after a woman called Canadian police, saying a man on board had explosives with him. The aircraft started in Toronto at 05:15 local time and when the aircraft was in Swedish territory, a woman called the Canadian police and said that this man could probably have a bomb on board the aircraft,” he said.

The Swedish police found no evidence to support the suspicions of a possible bomb threat. The suspect was released unconditionally after few hours.
