– SUSPECT IN CRICKET TEAM ATTACK ARRESTED

The Pakistani police said, on Wednesday 06/17/2009 evening, they had arrested one of seven men from a group linked to Taliban, who are accused of carrying out the Cricket-team attack in Lahore on 03/03/2009.

The suspect identified as Zubair, alias, Nek Mohammad, appeared at a televised press conference in Pakistan’s cultural hub Lahore with his face completely covered in a black mask. He said to reporters that he belonged to a group called the Tehrik-E-Taleban Punjab. It is not clear whether the group is linked to Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan, the main umbrella militant outfit that is led by Baitullah Mehsud from the tribal region of South Waziristan. Zubair is suspected of directly killing a policeman in the attack on Sri-Lanka cricket team.

Police said that the other six suspects — one of whom is wanted for a rocket attack on the former President Pervez Musharraf, in 2006, may have fled to Waziristan (see – 4-Rockets ).

Pakistan also announced, on Wednesday 06/17/2009, it shut down the Peshawar airport for all domestic and international flights for an “indefinite period” owing to terror threats as well as planned military operation in Waziristan to hunt down Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baituallah Mehsud (see – Baitullah 06.16.09 ).
